In April, we par\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adpated in a trip to Japan with a Th\u00fcrin\u00adgen del\u00ade\u00adga\u00adtion and were able to inter\u00adact with the startup com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adties in Osaka and Tokyo, which were impres\u00adsive. In the last 5\u201310 years the Japan\u00adese startup ecosys\u00adtem has exploded in size and greatly improved in qual\u00adity, as work\u00ading for a Japan\u00adese con\u00adglo\u00admorate is no longer seen as the only esteemed career path. In Japan, as in many parts of the globe, it has become en vogue<\/em> to found a startup<\/strong>.<\/p>\n This trip to Japan crys\u00adtal\u00adized our view that the pro\u00adlif\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion of star\u00adtups (often very sim\u00adi\u00adlar star\u00adtups) around the world has been expo\u00adnen\u00adtial in the last years<\/strong>, notwith\u00adstand\u00ading the pan\u00addemic and geopo\u00adlit\u00adi\u00adcal wars and con\u00adflicts. Infor\u00adma\u00adtion and, even more impor\u00adtantly, ideas are tra\u00advers\u00ading the globe at light speed with very lit\u00adtle fric\u00adtion<\/strong>. This extremely rapid and easy access to new ideas, no mat\u00adter where they emerge in the world, cre\u00adates tremen\u00addous value for human\u00adity and is spur\u00ading inno\u00adva\u00adtion on an unprece\u00addented level. While this devel\u00adop\u00adment is awe-inspir\u00ading, it also means that any idea that can be eas\u00adily repli\u00adcated will be repli\u00adcated. <\/strong>Impor\u00adtantly, for star\u00adtups and investors it dra\u00admat\u00adi\u00adcally increases the pre\u00admium on inno\u00adva\u00adtions that are truly dif\u00adfi\u00adcult to copy or emulate.<\/strong><\/p>\n While there can be many forms of pro\u00adtec\u00adtion from this far-reach\u00ading global com\u00adpe\u00adti\u00adtion, such as juri\u00adsidic\u00adtional laws (GDPR, for exam\u00adple) or the need for some prox\u00adim\u00adity to your cus\u00adtomers, many inno\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive busi\u00adnesses have eas\u00adily trans\u00adportable or replic\u00ada\u00adble inno\u00adva\u00adtions. For exam\u00adple, we view many AI-appli\u00adca\u00adtion-based busi\u00adness mod\u00adels as being highly-inno\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive but also sucep\u00adti\u00adble to repli\u00adca\u00adtion or hav\u00ading their prod\u00aduct become a tool\/feature in the large tech plat\u00adforms\u00b4 offerings.<\/p>\n In Th\u00fcrin\u00adgen, we pre\u00addomi\u00adnently have star\u00adtups that pos\u00adsess truly ground\u00adbreak\u00ading inno\u00adva\u00adtions<\/strong> that are patentable and pro\u00adtectable to a large degree. Thus in the longer run, these hard\u00adware-based mod\u00adels are often not as \u201chard\u201d as hav\u00ading a busi\u00adness that is vul\u00adner\u00ada\u00adble to quick mar\u00adket entry of well-financed com\u00adpeti\u00adtors from any\u00adwhere in the world, as many purely soft\u00adware-based busi\u00adness mod\u00adels are.<\/p>\n Essen\u00adtially, for both star\u00adtups and investors, inter\u00adest\u00ading inno\u00adva\u00adtions them\u00adselves are no longer enough. Inno\u00adva\u00adtions must also be pro\u00adtectable and extremely hard to repli\u00adcate in order to make a startup attrac\u00adtive for invest\u00adment<\/strong>.
