bm|t subsidiary oncgnostics conquers the Chinese market

August, 25 2022

The screening test for cervical cancer prevention GynTect is now available to doctors and patients in China, the world’s most populous country, under exclusive license. GynTect was developed by the oncgnostics GmbH and is already approved in Europe. It is the first product of its kind that can be used for abnormal findings in China. GynTect can now help millions of women there to take treatment measures quickly or prevent them from being overtreated. Above all, they will receive a reliable diagnosis much faster than usual.

How GynTect works

The GynTect molecular biological test developed by oncgnostics clarifies at an early stage whether a patient with conspicuous findings is developing or even already has cervical cancer that needs to be treated. The clarification test detects changes in the DNA (so-called methylations), which only occur if cervical cancer is present or developing. To carry out the test, all that is needed is a smear test like the ones taken by a gynecologist as part of regular screening. So far, GynTect has detected all cases of women with cervical cancer.

How GynTect is used in China

“We are delighted that GeneoDx has been able to approve GynTect, the first DNA methylation-based product for the early detection of cervical cancer in China. This is a great milestone for GeneoDx, but also for all Chinese women who can now have access to such an innovative product!” said Xiaokai Xia, Managing Director of Shanghai GeneoDx. GeneoDx is a subsidiary of the Sinopharm Group. In China, more than 100,000 new cases of cancer and almost 60,000 deaths are reported every year. Studies have shown that around 17% of women in China test positive for human papillomavirus (HPV) during cervical cancer screenings. This corresponds to around 70 million patients whose findings have yet to be clarified at great expense. This is because only a few women with an HPV infection develop cervical cancer. GynTect detects precisely these cases.

Advantages of GynTect

GynTect provides fast and reliable examination results and gives affected women certainty just as quickly about the best way to proceed after an abnormal preliminary examination result. Risk assessment is made much easier: on the one hand, unnecessary operations can be avoided and, on the other, the chances of successful treatment measures can be increased. According to GeneoDx, the Chinese cooperation partner of oncgnostics, the number of referrals for cervical endoscopy (colposcopy) can be reduced by more than 60% through the use of GynTect. In colposcopy, the cervix is examined for abnormalities and changes using a special microscope and procedure. In most cases, gynecologists in private practice are unable to perform this themselves. The woman concerned must therefore wait for an appointment at a specialist consultation.

In addition to numerous EU countries and the People’s Republic of China, GynTect is already distributed in Brazil and Mexico. oncgnostics GmbH is constantly working on concluding suitable cooperation agreements for other countries worldwide.

“This is another success for our bm|t portfolio and once again demonstrates the global standing of the life science cluster in Jena. We are particularly pleased that oncgnostics is already in advanced talks with other partners for approval in the USA.” Says Michael Thiele, Investment Manager at bm|t. Women who have abnormal findings from cervical cancer screening can talk to their gynecologist about GynTect or contact oncgnostics directly:
